“The Great Gatsby”

Judging by the new trailer, Baz Luhrmann’s 3-D remake of “The Great Gatsby” will transport you back to the age of the Roaring Twenties to the beat of “Church in the Wild” by Kanye West and Jay-Z featuring Frank Ocean. Unexpected. However, this is not supposed to be some stuffy homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel or the era; this movie is the Jazz Age tastefully pimped out for the mass-market.
Those of you who have been waiting for Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) to leave the heavy dramas and return to his flawless-skinned boyish charms will have their lust satiated. Here’s the proof: “You always look so cool. The man in the cool, beautiful shirts”, says love interest Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) to the splendid Jay Gatsby. Hair coiffed, voices purring, sporting crisp tailoring designed by Luhrmann's wife Catherine Martin – you’ll be seduced and pining for the past.
Certainly, that’s the case when you cast your eyes on the monumental set design, stunning Gucci-esque spring / summer’12 flapper dresses and enough cloche hats to fill a millinery. It’s a beauty that transfixes Nick Carraway (Toby Maguire) who is swept up in the decadent existence of Jay Gatsby, in 1922 New York.
Sadly, you’ll have to wait ‘til December 26 to see the movie but it looks like it’ll be the perfect piece of post-Christmas escapism. Click here to see the trailer.
